Job Sites
The Big Event is non-need based accepting job sites from all across the Lawrence Community including homes, agencies, businesses, parks, etc. Our volunteers can do any jobs that do not involve power tools and are safe to be completed. Jobs typically include gardening, yard work, cleaning out garages, painting, etc. Save the dates for October 5th, Fall Big Event, and April 5th, Spring Big Event!
Day-Of Logistics
On the day of The Big Event, volunteers will arrive to the job site between 9:50 am and 10:30 am depending on location. Volunteers should call the job site manager when they leave the Burge Union to give you a heads up that they are on the way, but sometimes this does not happen. If you received confirmation of being served and your volunteers do not arrive before 11am please give us a call, (785) 864-7469. If you were waitlisted and we receive enough volunteers, we will call you on day of to let you know. Volunteers can leave once the approved jobs are completed or once it is 2pm and return to the Burge Union.

No, KU liability will not allow us to go outside of Lawrence City limits.
Anyone is welcome to sign up as a job site including but not limited to homes, agencies, parks, etc in the Lawrence city limits. We are non-need based and will accept anyone as long as the job site is safe for our volunteers.
We are working through the list of job sites submissions but might be a bit behind. If it was over a week ago, please email bigeventku.community@gmail.com or call 785-864-7469 and they can give any updates they may have.
Yes! You are liable for talking with the owner and communicating with them.

You or someone you delegate must be on site while the volunteers are on site. If no one is present during the event, volunteers will be instructed to leave and serve a different job site.
If you are no longer available or interested in The Big Event, please email bigeventku.community@gmail.com at your earliest convenience. If you are cancelling a few days before the event, you should also give us a call at (785) 864-7469 to ensure volunteers do not arrive to your site.
Historically, we expect 65% of our volunteers to show up on the day of the event. At 9:50 am, we expect to match all of the volunteers that have arrived to Job Sites, therefore, all volunteers should be at their Job Site by 10:30 am. Around 11 am, we will call any Job Sites that we are unable to serve due to the lack of volunteers showing up.
We allow our student volunteers to plan and execute this event to its fullest, but mistakes happen. Our fall event is typically their first ever Big Event experience and we take those mistakes to learn from. If you need to contact our staff the day of, please call us at (785) 864-7469.
We use the same tools from year to year as supplies last. Every year we are able to supply rakes, shovels, garden spades, hedge clippers, hand rakes, yard bags, Windex, paint supplies, and more. If you have any special requests during your Job Site Check for tools you may need, please ask! We cannot ensure we can fulfill tool requests, but we will let you know at least a week before in case you will need to supply anything.
