Volunteer With Us!

If you are registering with a group, follow the steps below:

1. Determine your group name and who will serve as primary contact. 
   • Your group name must be listed the exact same on everyone's registration or you will be put in a separate group. 
   • At least one person in your group must select "yes" to serving as primary contact or you will not receive the proper information. The primary contact(s) will receive day-of communication and the groups job site information. 
2. Each person in your group must register on Rock Chalk Central for the respective event you want to volunteer with. 
   • The Big Event - Spring 2024
3. Once you have found the event you want to volunteer with and signed in on Rock Chalk Central, you will click "continue to RSVP"
4. Click "I will be attending"
5. Then complete the form that pops up. Some things to note on the form:
   • "What is the full name of your group?"
     • List your group name
       • NOTE: Your group name must be listed the exact same on everyone's registration or you will be put in a separate group. 
   • "I am serving as the primary contact for my group"
     • "Yes" if you are the person designated as your groups primary contact
     • "No" if you are not the person designated as your groups primary contact
       • NOTE: At least one person in your group must select "yes" to serving as primary contact or you will not receive the proper information. The primary contact(s) will receive day-of communication and the groups job site information. 
6. Once you have completed the form, you are registered to volunteer with The Big Event! Your groups Primary Contact(s) should receive further information at least a week prior to the event. If you have any questions, contact us at tbe@ku.edu. 
7. Stay updated on quick changes or cancellations of The Big Event on our Instagram @thebigeventku. 

If you are registering as an individual and not with a pre-assigned group, follow the steps below:

1. You must register on Rock Chalk Central for the respective event you want to volunteer with. 
   • The Big Event - Spring 2024
2. Once you have found the event you want to volunteer with and signed in on Rock Chalk Central, you will click "continue to RSVP"
3. Click "I will be attending"
4. Then complete the form that pops up. Some things to note on the form:
   • "Do you have a car and are you willing to drive your group?"
     • If you are willing to drive the group that you are assigned with, you will respond "yes"
     • If you are not willing to drive the group that you are assigned with or do not have a vehicle, you will respond "no". We will put you in a group with someone who is willing to drive. 
5. Once you have completed the form, you are registered to volunteer with The Big Event! You should receive further information at least a week prior to the event. If you have any questions, contact us at tbe@ku.edu. 
6. Stay updated on quick changes or cancellations of The Big Event on our Instagram @thebigeventku. 

Any student, staff or faculty of the University of Kansas. However, all volunteers MUST be affiliated with the University. All volunteers must register to participate and can note if they are with a pre-determined group or need to be placed in a group. One individual in each group must be listed as the main contact as they will receive further information about day-of logistics and volunteering. Individuals registered will receive further information about day-of logisitcs and volunteering.

NO! You must register by the deadline to volunteer with The Big Event. Registration is necessary as it allows us to pair up individuals into a group and then assign groups to job sites before the morning of the event creating a smoother process. As well, registration confirms all the necessary liability information we need from each participant. 

You will get to spend the two hours working with a community member or several and building connections with them. We are non-need based and a way of saying thank you to the community that surrounds campus all year. Jobs range from raking leaves, helping clean out garages, washing windows, and more. We can do anything that doesn’t involve power tools, but each site is pre-approved for the jobs listed on the information you receive during day-of. 

We are more than happy to sign any forms stating you completed service at the end of the event! You will need to check your community service requirements to verify this will count. If you have questions, you can call us at 785-864-7469 or email us at tbe@ku.edu.

All volunteers are required to wear close-toed shoes at all times of the event. We recommend you wear clothing items that you don't mind getting dirty and bring an extra jacket with you just in case! 

On the day of the event, volunteers will check in at their respective table depending on if they registered as a Primary Contact, With a Group but not Primary Contact, as an Individual and if they are not registered yet. 

From there, if you are a Primary Contact, Individual or Not Registered you will visit our Job Site table where you receive the number for your group. Everyone else is welcome to skip those tables and head into the courtyard to receive gloves, shirt, free breakfast and browse the sponsors tables. 

Once a good number of volunteers have checked-in we will begin to have groups head down to our tool station where you will receive the tools necessary for your job site and your job site information. Then you will call your job site manager to let them know your group is on the way to serve. 

Once you have completed the tasks listed or it is 12 pm, you will head back to the Burge Union to return your tools. And that's it, you served with The Big Event!
